As with many other countries and cultures, the Chinese has a passion for roses. They were depicted in many Chinese watercolors and were the subject of many books in the Imperial Chinese library.

The Chinese also used rose oil and rose water for medicinal purposes treating ailments of the stomach and colon with them. Perhaps the passion the Chinese had for these plants was their reason behind starting the cultivation of roses some 5,000 years ago.

During the 17th century roses were held in such high regard and were in such high demand that rose water and roses were used as a form of legal tender. They could be used by commoners to make payments on debts to royalty and to barter for food or necessities at the markets.

Royalty often surrounded themselves in roses, as did Napoleons wife Josephine, who had a garden with over 250 varieties of roses growing in it.

China first introduced cultivated roses to Europe in the late 18th century. They were repeat bloomers and caught the interest of hybridizers, since they would no longer have to wait for that once-a-year bloom of the varieties theyd been working with.

Take A Look at: Here!.Along with this introduction came the opportunity for more color beyond the pink and white of European roses. The roses from China were in colors red and even an odd green.

Yellow rose blooms didnt appear until the early 1900s and were credited to a Frenchman named Joseph Permet-Ducher.From there we have our roses today.

With over 30,000 varieties and almost every color imaginable, the passion for roses is still as powerful as it was thousands of years ago.
